The original castle was probably of the C11 and belonged to the Mountfitchet
family. It was destroyed in 1215 at the time it was held by Richard de
Mountfitchet. It was a castle of the ring and bailey type. Now only a
small piece of flint rubble walling remains on the south side of the ring.
The castle was not rebuilt after 1215. AM. (RCHM 3).
