House - Dated 1913 (on fireback) for, and possibly by, Mr Boyle; additions
and alterations 1920s/30s. North range of red brick in English bond with
ashlar dressings; south range of brick, tile-hanging, timber frame with brick
infill and with plastered infill to gables. Plain tile roofs. In Elizabethan
style. North (entrance) elevation: 2 storeys with basement. 10 bays, end
bays projecting as gabled wings, bay 2 projecting in angle; single storey
porch to centre. Dentilled ground-floor cornice; lst-floor string; parapet.
Porch has 4-centred-arched opening and inner doorway, each with quoined
surround and sunk spandrels; octagonal corner turrets; curvilinear gable
with raised shield. Windows have quoined surrounds, champered mullions,
4-centred arched lights on ground and 1st floors, and leaded glazing; they
are mostly of 3 lights transomed to bay 4 and on ground floor of bays 3, 6 and
8; but of Z lights above porch, to bay 6, bay 7 1st floor, and bay 9 ground
floor; basement windows to bays 2, 4, 7, 8 and 10. 2 span roof. Broad
stacks to gable of left wing and right side of right wing. Set-back wings to
left and right.
Garden (south) elevation: 2 storeys with attic; 6 main bays. Bay 4 has
2-storey porch, open on ground-floor with timber posts and part-glazed
small-pane inner door; lst-floor sundial and 3 light window with sill and
lintel bands; ogee roof with finial. On right of porch a 4-light window to
each floor that on ground floor in flat-roofed projection. On left, paired
4-light, double-transomed bay windows under gablets; a single-light window to
outer side of each. Bays 1 and 6 project under gables, bay 1 having a 6-light
window to ground floor, 4-light window above; bay 6 having a 2-storey canted
bay window of 1:3:1 lights to each floor. Gables have large boards and
pendant finials. Roof, lower than over front (north) range, has three
4-light, flat-roofed dormers and 2 stacks in front roof pitch, that above
porch with multiple flues and archaic in character. Interior: Good
contemporary interiors. Stair has moulded balusters and newels to lower
section and pierced ashlar balustrade; upper section has moulded splat
balusters. Panelled Dining Room with 4-centred-arched stone fireplace, the
firback dated 1913, and Minstrels Gallery off which opens on 1st floor the
Garden Room which has linefold-panelled dado with brattished top, William
Morris-style wallpaper, and elaborate coffered ceiling with moulded
plasterwork. Dining Room is in C18 style having panelled dado; wall panels
with decorative columns between; elaborate fireplace architrave with fluted
columns and broken pediment and panelled ceiling. Study and Drawing Room have
1930s fireplaces and bookshelves; those in the Drawing Room with fake books.
Various good fireplaces and contemporary sanitary fittings on upper floors,
the most noteable room being the "Italian Bedroom" which is in Hollywood-style
having columns, decorative fireplace and door architraves, and moulded cornice
and bed tester.
