TL 90 NW STEEPLE STANSGATE ROAD

1/171 Stansgate Abbey Farmhouse

GV II

House. C18 of earlier origin with later and C20 extensions and alterations.
Timber framed and plastered C18 central range, C20 rough rendered brick front
range, gabled wing to rear. Red plain tiled roofs, gambrelled to C18 range, 2
storeys and attic. 2 storey front range. 8 square leaded 2 light casements to
first floor, central band, left and right French windows, central gabled porch,
4 panel, 2 light door with side lights. C18 interior frame partly exposed with
chamfered bridging joists and pegged side girt. The house stands in a moated
site, formerly the site of the C12 Cluniac Abbey of which only one rebuilt wall
remains showing above ground q.v. 1/112. The major part of the C16 house
described RCHM 4 has been demolished, fragments may remain in the present north
wing.
