Description

HOXTON STREET
1. -------------
5013
Nos 124 and 126
TQ 3383 30/99
II

2.
Probably 4th decade of C18. Pair of substantial houses, each 3 windows wide and
with 3 storeys above a high basement. Stock bricks with red dressings.
Cambered arches to windows. Moulded stone cornice below top storey to parapet
to hipped, tiled roof, that to No 126 now coursed with metal sheeting. Some
sashes altered. No 126, the larger house, retains a good early C19 stone
entrance doorway with engaged Doric columns within a single storeyed shop built
over the front garden. No 124 has been similarly extended and is said to retain
a timber doorcase with fluted pilasters and carved brackets supporting its cornice.
The interior of No 124 is said to be altered. No 126 retains original panelling
and joinery of good quality to its entrance passage and stair compartment, the
stair having shaped ends to the steps, column newels with ball-finials and
3 twisted balusters per bead (now coped in). An uncertain amount of original
panelling and joinery survives above the ground storey, mostly boarded over.
Well finished rear elevations with some alterations.
