Farmhouse, now 2 dwellings. Probably C16, enlarged in C17, altered in C18;
recently restored and subdivided. Sandstone random rubble, incorporating
remains of earlier timber-framed building, slate roof. L-shaped plan formed.
by 3-bay formerly timber-framed range built gable to road with added one-bay
wing at north end of west side. Three storeys; north side (to road) has one
window on each floor of 1st bay, and 2 other windows at Ist floor to the
right, all 2-light casements with restored surrounds, but irregular in size;
hipped roof. Left return wall has massive external chimney stack, to rear of
this a restored (or inserted) cross-window, and a small 2-light window. Rear
gable has a small single-light window at 1st floor, and a 2-light recessed
mullioned attic window (lacking the mullion). other openings of less
interest.
Interior: the 3-bay range (Rock House Farmhouse) incorporates parts of 2
timber cross frames and the wall plate between these on the west side
(visible in Hill House adjoining), with jowelled wall posts, braces to the
tie beams, and some wattle staves; at ground floor of the northern of these
frames, a re-located shaped and nicked timber lintel; in the east wall of the
northern bay, a bread oven beside the fireplace (which is altered), and at
1st floor above this, an original chamber fireplace with 4-centred head. The
wing (Hill House) has some large beams, and the exposed side of remains of 2
wall posts and a wall plate (belonging to the original main range).
