Country house. Original block probably early C18, enlarged to
north in early C19, and with later C19 service wings to east.
Mostly in incised render on plinth with moulded stone cornice and
blocking course, slate roof, ashlar end and ridge stacks with
offset and moulded cornice. Original range has in addition a
fluted frieze; later range has alternating slightly raised quoins,
ashlar bow to west with hipped roof. Originally single range,
enlarged with link wing and parallel north range, forming U shape,
with large service courtyard to east formed by L shape wing
returning to south. Mostly 2 storeys. Earlier block is
asymmetrical with 2 windows to left and 3 to right of large semi-
circular projecting bay with 3 windows, all 12-pane sashes with
first floor sill band. Similar to left on ground floor, but plate
glass sashes to right, outer 2 with decorative pelmets. Central
pedimented stone doorcase on bay with attached unfluted columns and
three-quarter glazed door with plain transom light. Link wing to
rear has four 12-pane sashes with plain stone architraves to each
floor, and large segmental bow on west end of north wing has
similar large sashes, formerly with wooden louvred shutters.
North front in 3 bays, recessed in centre with large Greek Doric
porte-cochère with paired columns to front and single column to
rear. Ground floor bays each have segmental headed recess with
tripartite sashes to each side, although blind to right, and
central half-glazed double doors with side lights. One 12-pane
sash with moulded architrave to first floor on each bay. Large
late Cl9 service wing in coursed and dressed stone with hipped and
sprocketed slate roof and sashes in plain stone architraves.
Interior largely unaltered. Older range has cantilevered moulded
stone stair with wreathed and ramped handrail and wrought iron
balustrade. Most original joinery survives including doorcases,
shutters, and early Cl9 wing has several very large rooms with all
original plasterwork and elaborate ceilings, and doorcases in
moulded arched surrounds.
