Barn, originally a hall house, late medieval or first half of C16, altered c18,
timber framed, weatherboarded, corrugated iron roof. Single storey, 3 bay exterior,
part 2 storey, 6 bay evidence in interior. Elevation to farmyard has outshut extension
lean-to to north east, central cart opening, boarded window at left. Gabled roof
with hiplets. Interior: Substantial timber frame survives of 3-cell house with
central hall. Ground sill largely replaced. 4 angle hall posts with jowls, down
braces to mid rails. Intermediate wall posts with some down braces, mid rails
and intermediate bay posts. North gable has upper level square section mullioned
opening , mortice evidence of similar domestic windows in north gable (one), false
gable (two) east wall (3). Central bay possibly originally a hall open to roof,
possibly floored solar at south, unfloored service room at north. No structural
stack evidence, but soot blackening in centre and south bays. 2 main trusses
defining hall have jowled posts, straight and curved struts supporting central
tie beams. Truss at south has 2 queen posts supporting collar,originally closed
above tie beam and possibly up to apex (to close off first floor of solar). 3
intermediate collar trusses, one at each hiplet, one above hall bay roof frame
largely C18, with trenched purlins, many roof rafters replaced or re-used.
