7/10012 Newbold Tunnel North Portal
GV II
Tunnel portal. 1831-34 with slight C20 alterations. Brick and stone.
Single, semi-circular arch with upward curving band and solid parapet.
Spandrels curve outwards and run into wing walls which have trailing
edges. All of brick except copings which are stone. Double towpaths
throughout tunnel with cast-iron handrails with trailing edges for tow
ropes. A rare example of a canal tunnel with these features
constructed during 1830's improvements to the Oxford Canal carried out
with William Cubitt as consultant engineer.
South Portal lies in Rugby civil parish q.v.
