STRETTON UNDER FOSSE

House. 1716. Probably by Francis Smith of Warwick. Brick, in Flemish
bond with ashlar dressings. Roof hidden by balustrades. H-shaped plan,
the ground storey of recessed central range brought forward for Edward
Wood (owner 1862-1898) but retaining original central doorway. 3
storeys; 11-window range. 6-panelled door with fanlight within
rusticated stone arch with keyblock and engaged doric columns
supporting entablature with triglyph frieze. 2-pane horned sashes to
all storeys with eared and shouldered architraves with keyblocks, and
brick aprons. Plinth in imitation of a basement storey. Rusticated
quoins and moulded stone eaves cornice. Balustrade surmounted by urns
to third storey, and to ground storey of central range. East facade
has 3-bay pediment, and Doric colonnade with entablature added c1900.
To each corner a rainwater head dated 1673 decorated with figures in
niches and coats of arms. Interior: original staircase of 3 turned
balusters per tread, and carved spandrels. Some inlay. Adam-style
fireplaces to ground storey, one said to be by Adam himself. Large
white marble fireplace in altered saloon, the mantel supported by
bearded atlantes to left and right. 6-panelled doors, and some
original wood and plasterwork, though much for Edward Wood and next
owner Col. A.H. Heath. Large C19 and C20 wing attached to north, in
similar style, is not of special architectural interest. History;
Newbold Revel was built for Sir Fulwar Skipwith.
