LEAVENHEATH KINGSLAND LANE
5377
TL 93 NW 11/936 Kingsland House
II
A pair of cottages, now one house. Early C18. Timber-framed; C20 render, with
lightly incised panels of guiloche ornament; thatch. 1 1/2 storeys. An internal
chimney-stack with a plain red brick shaft. 2 gabled dormers with 2-light C20
casement windows, diamond leaded panes. On the ground floor 2x2-light C20 standard
casement windows with diamond leaded panes and 2 fully glazed doors, one, to the
left of the stack, within an open gabled timber porch. A single-storey lean-to
extension at the rear with a C20 roof, flat topped behind a hipped parapet roof.
Inside, one large room on the ground floor on each side of the chimney-stack, but
evidence that they were formerly divided into 2. A winding stair in each corner,
and no access on the upper floor from one side of the stack to the other. The
upper floor is divided on each side into a landing bedroom and a main bedroom.
Framing complete and exposed inside: long primary braces, bisected studs, joists
set on edge, with their ends resting on pegged clamps; main beams with small chamfer:
rafters only visible, no ridge. To right of stack, a truss framed for a half hip,
which suggests that the building may have been extended to form 2 cottages and has
a slightly older core. This is also suggested by a slight difference in ridge
height to the left of the stack.
