Boundary railings and gates. 1860s. Cast-iron and stone kerbs. Spear-headed railings with bracketed standards, good gates with iron piers made of connected rings curve over to an overthrow lamp, with double gates. Decorative rails extend from the main entrance to enclose the S section of the former infantry barracks. One of the first barracks showing the more open planning established following Aldershot, with railings rather than a high wall, emphasising the barracks role as a transit station, rather than for civil order. (Harfield A: The Gosport Barracks, sometimes known as "New Barracks": Gosport: 1988-: 16-21).
