Barlowfold

Generator house: C.1890 for W A Turner. Pre-cast concrete sections.
One-storey, symmetrical, 2-bay south front. 9-pane iron casements.
Interior: A steel pipe ducts water from the former mill leat through
a turbine electric generator by W Gunther of Oldham and out beneath
the house. The switchgear for both AC and DC generation is against
the south wall.

W A Turner was an early pioneer of the use of electric light in his
Cotton Mills and an active director of the Edison Electric Light Co.
and this installation supplied Barlowfold, a house he bought in 1888.
