Bothy. Circa 1854 by P.C.Hardwick for Melville Portal MP of Laverstoke House (qv);
altered and extended in circa late C19 or early C20. Red brick and flint ground floor and
scalloped tile-hanging above. Half-hipped and gabled roof with bands of shaped tiles and
ornate bargeboards, the finials and ridge cresting missing. Central axial brick stack with
flanking octagonal shafts with moulded bases and caps.
T-shaped on plan with tower and porch on side of right-hand (north) cross-wing. In the late
C19 or early C20 the loggia under the front of the cross-wing was filled in and a small
single-storey outshut was added at the back. Picturesque Gothic style.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2-bay east front facing walled kitchen garden. Gabled cross-wing on
right with first floor oriel on brackets, above which is tympanum in the gable with terracotta
arms; the Gothic arcaded loggia below has been replaced by a large 9-light mullion-transom
window. On left similar 3-light window and oriel above through eaves with bargeboarded
gable and tympanum with terracotta arms with monogram,MP, on shield. Oriel on south
end. Round flint and brick tower on north side of cross-wing with buttress and loops; its
tiled octagonal spire truncated. Open porch on right of tower with gableted roof on arched
wooden posts. At rear (west) jettied gable on left with oriel and single-storey outshut on
right with pointed arch doorway. All casement windows, originally with leaded panes.
