4/75 Shepherd's Cottage.
II
Formerly belvedere, later house: later C17. Rendered, coursed,
squared, sandstone rubble, with sandstone dressings. Collapsed
Kerridge stone-slate roof and stone chimney. Square in plan.
2-storey, single bay fronts under cross-gabled roof. All openings now
blocked but windows originally 3-light, rebated, chamfered stone
mullions (only some of which survive), some in upper storey may have
been changed to sashes. Chamfered stone doorcase in south face.
Interior: Shows that first floor was the main room with fine (but
deteriorating) C17 plaster overmantel, the centre with an armorial
shield, bordered by twisted foliage and pilasters.
Similar buildings can be seen in the garden to the east and on 2 hills
to the south of Lyme Park (q.v.) in a painting of C1690.
