Parish Church. C13, but mostly rebuilt in 1870-72 by Ewan Christian.
Ashlar; clay tile roofs with coped verges. West tower, 3 bay nave
with north porch and south aisle, 2-bay chancel and south vestry; re-
built in a late C13 style, C13 West Tower of 3 stages marked by string
courses, blocked C18 window to North and South sides of first stage,
narrow trefoil headed west window, clock to west face of second stage,
pointed belfry openings of 2 trefoil headed lights with quatrefoil
above, hood mould over , crenellated parapet with gargoyles at angles,
spire of 1870-72; pointed nave windows of 2 trefoiled lights with
quatrefoil above and hood mould over, gabled north porch with shaped
barge boards; south aisle has windows of 3 trefoil headed lights, the
central one surmounted by a large cinquefoil, the others by pointed
trefoils; chancel has an east window of 5 lights, the central one
cinquefoil headed, the others trefoil headed, and a rose window above,
all under a pointed arch; vestry has East window of 3 trefoil-headed
lights, the central one is taller and has a rounded trefoil above, the
others have pointed trefoils above, hood mould over, south wall has a
Caernarvon arch doorway to the east and a pointed window of 2 trefoil
headed lights with quatrefoil over and hood mould. Interior: Nave
arcade has cylindrical columns (the 2 centre ones are marble) with
square abaci to capitals from which spring chamfered pointed arches;
very wide pointed chancel arch springing from short marble columns on
corbels with capitals of naturalistic foliage, inscription painted
around the arch "THINE IS THE KINGDOM THE POWER AND THE GLORY"; pointed
arch door to west tower; arcade between south aisle and vestry of 2
pointed arches with central marble column, the capital carved with
naturalistic foliage, open circle in the spandrel; wide pointed arch
between chancel and vestry; open timber roofs to nave and south aisle
with arch braced collars and king-posts. Vestry has collar and
scissor truss roof. Fittings: C19 stone font with octagonal shaft
to moulded base and circular bowl inscribed around top: "SUFFER LITTLE
CHILDREN TO COME UNTO ME AND FORBID THEM NOT FOR OF SUCH IS THE KINGDOM
OF HEAVEN", C19 stone pulpit inscribed with the sacred monogram "Ihr"
and around the top: "HE THAT HATH MY WORD LET HIM SPEAK MY WORD
FAITHFULLY"; C19 wooden reredos with cusped panels and gilt tracery;
stained glass: Old fragments in south aisle west window, C19 East
window by de Morgan. Monuments: Marble plaque to west end of south
aisle to Honoris Bainbrigge d. 1788, marble with segmental base,
moulded cornice, surmounted by an urn draped with cloth. B.O.E. P.225.
