Fine example of a late C15 moated manor house with the remains of the moat.
Restored and added to in the early 1920s. A timber-framed and plastered
house with many C16 and C17 features. A small C17 wing extends to the north-west
at the rear and there are modern additions. Two storeys. The upper storey
is jettied on the south-east front on exposed joists and curved brackets
with some of the original moulded posts and capitals remaining. Three window
range. The original windows were probably oriels with high level side windows
and the oriels were replaced in the C18 by tripartite double-hung sashes
with glazing bars (modern casements at the north-east end). The original
high level side windows with moulded mullions remain. A 2 storeyed modern
gabled porch projects on the front and a modern 2 storeyed bay on the south-west
end, both are built in keeping with the style of the house. Roof tiled,
with an original central chimney stack with grouped diagonal shafts on a
square base with 2 panels which formerly had the date 1537. There is also
an original chimney stack with grouped diagonal shafts at the north-east
end. The interior has some fine curved and moulded beams and joists and
the south-west room has C16-C17 panelling and a carved wall plate. There
is an original doorway with curved spandrels. (RCHM 21).
