Rare example of an early domestic building, originally an early C13 manor
house (circa 1200) partly rebuilt and altered in the C14 and C16. Built
on a half H shaped plan with gabled cross wings at the north-east and south-west
ends projecting on the north-west side. The north-east wing with thick
stone walls and a heavy timber floor was the kitchen wing of the original
early C13 manor (circa 1200). The floor is supported in the centre of the
span by a longitudinal scarf jointed beam on braced posts. Two original
stone doorways to the screens of the great hall survive and there are remains
of C13 windows. The frame of the hall block is early C14 (circa 1320-30)
and has 2 quartrefoil posts of an aisle. Much of the original roof construction
remains. A floor, staircase and fireplace were inserted in the C16. The
solar wing on the south-west end is of similar date to the hall block and
has ancient floorboards of up to 3 ft wide. On the exterior the house has
leaded casements. The north-east wing has C16 mullioned and transomed windows.
Roof tiled, with a central square chimney stack to the hall block. (RCHM
