Co-operative stores. Dated 1908; for Wear Valley Co-operative Society.
Sandstone ashlar and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings; Welsh slate roof
with red ridge tiles and terra-cotta finials. 3 storeys, 2 wide bays.
Recessed entrance framed by narrow pilasters at centre of each bay; flanking
shop windows framed by rusticated pilasters supporting continuous cornice;
first-floor shop lights with coloured top panes also framed by pilasters which
support entablature with dentilled cornice; fan-moulded semi-circular pediments
on outer pilasters. Top floor has central oriel, on bracket with scroll
inscribed LABOUR AND WAIT, flanked by sash windows under shaped gables, with
incised panels AD and 1908; moulded gable copings rest on corniced blocks with
ball finials. Half-hipped roof has tall fleur-de-lys finials. Included for
historic interest.
