3/134 The Necessary House

GV II

Former privy now summerhouse. Mid-C18. By Joseph Sanderson for
Leak Okeover. Rendered with ashlar plinth and dressings. Classical
garden feature. Moulded open pediment and tripartite arrangement of
arched openings, the outer ones as windows, the centre one is entrance
with shallow rusticated dressings and voussoirs. Interior plastered.
2 stone privys flank the entrance. Sanderson's drawing for the
building survives and "The drawing of the Necessary House" is mentioned
in a letter from Sanderson dated November 22nd 1746. C.L. Vol. 135
(1964).
