C17 timber-framed and plastered building on an L shaped plan with a gabled
wing at the south-west end. This inn is associated with the notorious C18
highwayman Dick Turpin who was born in the village when his father was proprietor
of the inn. The inn contains copies of the parish register recording Dick
Turpin's baptism. It was a letter addressed to the Rose and Crown when he
was arrested in York under an assumed name which led to his conviction and
execution in 1739. The inn was considerably altered in the C18 and later.
Two storeys. Three window range, double-hung sashes with glazing bars. The
ground storey has 3-light windows with narrow side lights. The roof of the
main block is slate, with a central square chimney stack and the roof of the
north-west wing is tiled. The interior has exposed ceiling beams. (RCHM 9).
