Terraced corner house. c.1777 Portland Estate development probably by
John White in partnership with the plasterer Thomas Collins (associates
of Sir William Chambers). Stock brick with channelled stucco ground
floor; slate roof. Bowed rear and wing with bowed re-entrant angle. 4
storeys and basement. 3 windows wide with 4-window return to Weymouth
Street. Semicircular arched doorway beneath early to mid C.19 stucco
Doric columned porch; panelled door, sidelights and fanlight. Recessed
sashes, under flat gauged arches to upper floors. Stucco plat bands and
modillion cornice. Early C.19 cast iron balcony of enriched slender
baluster pattern across 1st floor. Cast iron area railings with urn
finials. Fine interior elaborated on the norm typical of these
speculative 1st rate houses of the 1770s in Harley Street; top lit
geometrical stone staircase with anthemion-scroll wrought iron
balustrade, decorated skylight drum; delicate flute and patera and wreath
and garland plasterwork with stucco mythological relief medallions a la
Chambers, framed by garlands, over inlaid marble chimneypieces and in
hall; mahogany doors; etc.
