Headstone. Dated 1839. By Woolerton. Slate. Headstone with incised border
in Gothic style especially remarkable for its inscription. 'In Memory of Samuel
Matthews, Labourer, who had both his legs broke, and one of his ankles dislocated
by falling of a load of beans, on Mr. King's farm, at Ratcliffe on the Wreak;
and died in Leicester Infirmary, October the 13th, 1839 : Aged 60 years.'
This stone was erected as a mark of respect by his master Mr. Thomas Freeman,
to whom he was about 9 years a faithful and affectionate servant. "An honest
man's the noblest work of God" '. Stands close to S porch of Church of St.
Botolph (q.v.)
