Former furnace, now 3 cottages C17 and C18. The main portion comprising the
North East and centre cottages is timber-framed. The portion comprising the
South West cottage is an C18 addition. The whole building is fronted with red
brick and grey headers on ground floor and tile-hung above. Tiled roof. Casement
windows with diamond-shaped leaded lights. 2 storeys. 4 windows. The C18
addition (Pay Cottage) has a half-hipped gable end containing an attic window
and a doorway with flat hood on brackets. This was the last furnace in Sussex
at which iron was smelted. It was in operation as late as 1825, though most
of the Sussex furnaces had ceased to work about 50 years before.
