House, used as school in C18 and C19 and now offices. Late C17 (porch
dated 1679). extended to rear with schoolroom in early C19; restored and
internally rebuilt in 1980s. Roughly coursed limestone rubble; gabled
pantile roof with late C19 brick ridge and end stacks. L-plan, with
early C19 rear left wing. 2 storeys; 4-window range. Timber lintels over
c20 2-light casements. those to first floor being set in gabled half
dormers. 1980s door with timber porch to front having central
pendentive, strapwork carving and date 1679. Early C19 one-storey rear
extension of 2 bays has segmental brick arches over 1980s replica sashes
and door. Interior rebuilt in 1980s.
In 1724 John Attwells left a legacy of £500 to found a Free School in
Thornbury, which amalgamated with the grammar school in 1879 and was
used as a Church Institute in the C20. Kinsmill Grove, treasurer of the
Trustees in the early C19, was responsible for the extension to the
school.
