Listing Text

L shaped range of barns at New House was described as follows:

NEWHOUSE ROAD
1.
5113
Sheepridge
L shaped range of
barns at New House
SE 1519 17/1050
II
2.
Probably C17. L-shaped plan. Aisled barns, externally faced with hammer-dressed
stone. Pitched stone slate roof. East elevation of north range has one blocked
contemporary door with chamfered surround and monolithic lintel, C19 arched
barn door and another C17 or C18 door with chamfered surround. Internally
this range has 4 bays, west range 3. High stone stylobates. Chamfered posts
and principals. King post trusses, arch braced, and braced to aisle plates:
subsidiary set of tie beams at level of aisle wall plates. Most principals
apparently re-used as they are mortised for studs which (eg in case of purlins)
cannot have been in this position: they may have come from New Hall when this
was rebuilt. West range has an ornamental finial on its south gable end.
One storey range of stables running south from south end of this range. One
storey range of cartsheds supported partly on cast iron columns twining east
from it.
