2. Council house. Circa 1924 to a prefabricated system designed by the
Horsley Ironworks Company of Tipton. Cast-iron panels bolted together
and painted externally with asbestos sheeting internally hung on wooden
battens. Low pitched hipped slate roof with end stacks and larger stack in
centre of ridge. 2 storeys; 4 window front, the central windows tripartite
sashes, the single outer windows on the upper floors ordinary sashes. All
windows wLth glazing bars. Half-glazed doors below outer windows with
hoods on brackets. This house is listed as an example of experimental housing
using cast-iron as an alternative building material, thus exploring the
possibilities of using non-standard materials and craftsmen at a time,
following the First World War, of shortage of both commodities.
