House. Early C19, but with rear wing of early to mid C18; altered. Coursed
squared sandstone (smaller and more regular masonry in the front range),
slate roofs. L-plan: early C19 3-unit front range built at right angles
across end of earlier building which now forms a long service wing to the
rear. Two storeys and 3 bays, symmetrical; central doorway has simple
moulded architrave with small cornice, panelled door and rectangular
overlight with radiating glazing bars; 2 windows at ground floor and 3 above,
all with raised sills and mostly 16-pane sashes (lower leaves of those at
ground floor temporarily removed for repair at time of survey, 1987). Low-
pitched hipped roof; side-wall chimneys. Three-bay rear wing of 2 lower
storeys has doorways to 1st and 3rd bays, with broad beaded jambs and
lintels, between these a modern French window inserted in a formerly
horizontal rectangular 3-light window; a 3-light window above this and a 2-
light window above each door, all with flat-faced flush mullions and run-out
sills and heads, and that in the centre with rectilinear leaded glazing in
the outer lights; in angle with main range, an inserted oblique window at
ground floor and a single-light window above (probably the left light of a
former 2- or 3-light window otherwise covered by the C19 addition).
Interior: entrance hall of front range has dog-legged open-string staircase
with scrolled brackets, stick balusters, ramped handrail with wreathed
curtail; reeded architraves to doorways and windows (which have internal
shutters); thick partition wall between entrance hall and right-hand room
suggests that this is a remodelling of the 4th bay of the earlier building;
the rear wing, on a lower level, has inter alia, stop-chamfered spine beams,
and a rectangular brick fireplace with rounded corners (early C18 type);
2nd chimney stack and part of upper floor in rear wing removed (by previous
owners).
