Farmhouse. C17. Shale rubble and cob partly lime washed, slate sills, wooden lintels.
Scantle slate roofs, replaced with asbestos slate to front, eaves heightened in the
C19, probably formerly thatched. Cast iron ogee gutters.
L-shaped plan of 3 rooms to main range plus unheated service wing at right angles at
rear of lower end, left, and outbuilding adjoining at the right hand side. The front
range probably original 2 rooms with central cross passage with the hall/kitchen at
the lower end left. In circa the early C19 the present front window openings were
probably cut and the original front wall became the rear. The plan was also altered
to create a small service room between the kitchen and the parlour with an axial
passage behind. A number of C18 and early C19 farmhouses in Cornwall were built with
this plan arrangement.
2 storeys. Irregular 4 window south front with C20 windows. The doorway with 4-panel
door later glazed to top panels is off-centre towards the left. Glazed porch with
brick plinth walls.
The rear is less altered but some of the original window openings are blocked.
Central doorway with old ledged door. The gable ended service wing projecting from
the right hand side was probably a dairy/pantry with cider loft over approached by
external stone steps at the gable end.
Interior is little altered since the C19: enormous hearth in the kitchen and one C17
oak ceiling beam survives with straight chanfer and stops.
A little altered at the front but the rear elevation has considerable charm and
interest.
