GV I
Public road bridge over River Calder. 1797 to 1804 (dated on parapets); by
John Carr of York. Sandstone ashlar. Classical style. Three segmental
arches with rusticated voussoirs, scrolled keystones, and moulded arch-bands;
canted piers of rusticated masonry between the arches; rectangular piers at
each end, of similar masonry, each with a coved niche which has stepped
voussoirs; prominent modillioned cornice and blind-balustraded parapet.
Approach ramps at both ends, that at the west end carried on 3 diminishing
semicircular arches, that at the east end on one similar arch; and drum
terminals of banded masonry, with domed tops. The centre of the inner side
of each parapet has a large tablet with moulded surround, that on the north
inscribed:
"JOHN CARR ESQUIRE
OF YORK, ARCHITECT
1797"
and that on the south:
"BERNARD HARTLEY
OF PONTEFRACT BUILDER
1804"
