- II
Monumental obelisk to Field Marshal Viscount Combermere, 1890. Keuper and
bunter sandstones. Deep square plinth with banded rustication supporting two
chamfered steps leading to the base of the monument which has clasping
buttresses to the corners and a cyma-moulded cornice above. There is a
further chamfered step supporting the colossal obelisk which has,
approximately half way up each side, aedicular window surrounds with
rudimentary classical detailing set upon a cyma-moulded string course. To
the centre of the base on each side is a panel of red bunter sandstone.
To the south this contains a doorway, and at the north it bears a memorial
inscription which has the coat of arms of the Cottons at left and at right
the words
IN MEMORY OF FIELD MARSHAL VISCOUNT COMBERMERE G:G:B.
K:S:I. K:T:S. G:G:H. P:G BORN 1773 DIED 1865.
ERECTED IN 1890 BY THE DIRECTION OF HIS WIDOW MARY
VISCOUNTESS COMBERMERE WHO DIED 1889
The monument is similar to that designed by Sir Robert Smirke for
Combermere's erstwhile commanding officer, the Duke of Wellington, and
erected in Phoenix Park, Dublin in 1817-22.
