- II
Game Keepers house. Datestone 1845, probably by Bryan Browning, for the Marquis
of Exeter, Burghley House. Squared coursed limestone with Collyweston slate
roof. Originally 2-unit plan with attached game larder, forming an L-shape
range. 2 storeys. Main front is 3 bays. Central gablet has single-light stair
window under gauged stone head. C19 casement window, under similar head, to
ground floor right. Large gabled porch breaks forward to left. Plank door is set
under open verandah with turned wooden pillar and seats. Half timbered
decoration in apex of gable and wooden bargeboard with quatrefoil decoration.
Brick end and lateral stacks have twin flues linked by an arch and each having
open crown finials. Datestone in central gablet has coronet of the Marquis of
Exeter above the date. Left gable has C19 casement windows and elevation to
right has half dormer with a similar window. Lean-to projection below window
said to have been a bread oven. Rear range, originally the game larder, is now
incorporated into the house. Interior not inspected.
