Manor house. 1669 an datestone but part probably earlier; altered C20, Part
squared and coursed marlstone and limestone rubble with sane wooden lintels:
Stonesfield-slate roofs with brick stacks. L-plan, infilled. 2 storeys plus
attic. The longest side now has, towards the right end, four C20 windows with
concrete lintels, but retains masonry of at least 3 builds including a section
of chamfered plinth. The roof, which has a ridge stack to left of centre, is
hipped to left and returns to the wing, which has similar windows plus a C20 bay
window, and includes a datestone inscribed "WE/B/1669" built into a jamb. The
rear gable wall shows an earlier lower gable including an ovolo-moulded 3-light
wood-mullioned window with transoms. The right gable wall of the main range has
a similar window but without transoms, and includes the present main entrance
plus a blocked entrance. The infill range is lower and is probably C19/C20.
Interior: Largest room has heavy stop-chamfered beans and a wide inglenook
fireplace with a stop-chamfered bressumer and remains of a bread oven; small
early-C18 stone fireplace. The initials on the datestone refer to William and
Elizabeth Bruce.
