3/40 Wheatcroft
- II
Inn, now house. Early/mid C17 and C18, altered and extended C20. Coursed
limestone rubble with wooden lintels; Welsh-slate roof with stone-and-brick
gable stacks. L-plan. 2 storeys. 2-window front of C18 range has a central
doorway, plus 12-pane sashes at first floor with stop-chamfered lintels and
tripartite sashes below, one re-sited. Lower C20 wing breaks forward to left and
incorporates an earlier subsidiary range. Large C17 rear wing, returning from
left end of C18 range, retains some old casements with stop-chamfered lintels,
and has a canted 2-storey projection, probably formerly a staircase. Large stack
on rear gable has 2 diagonal shafts, part ashlar and part brick. Interior: C17
range has stop-chamfered joists and beams, plus a large open fireplace with
canted sides and a heavy bressumer with bold chamfer-stops. Formerly The
Wheatsheaf Inn. C20 extension is not of special architectural interest.
