Hotel. Late C18 or early C19. Roughcast stone with slate roofs. 3 storeys
with attic, 5 bays, with 2-storey wing of 5 bays to left and sympathetically
designed C20 wing to right. 1st bay projects under pediment and has 1st floor
sill band. Windows have paired sashes, most with glazing bars, but 5 have
single glazing bars. 1st bay has large segmental-headed window to 1st and 2nd
floors, with small-paned glazing. Gabled dormers have slate hung cheeks and
sashed windows with glazing bars; 1st bay has 2 dormers to each return.
Entrance between 3rd and 4th bays has C20 porch of plastic Doric columns, frieze
and cornice, supporting model of swan. Entrance to left of window to 1st bay
has flat canopy on curly brackets, similar canopy over entrance, now window to
right of window. 5-bay wing projects to left. Irregularly placed windows are
sashed with vertical glazing bars, some to ground-floor segmental headed.
Projecting gable-end stack, sashed window with glazing bars to right return.
Rear has sashed windows with glazing bars and later extensions. 3 cross-axial
stacks and one gable-end stack. Originally a posting house, the hotel has group
value with Newby Bridge (q.v.).
