GV II
House. 1902-3, by C.R. Ashbee. Squared and coursed limestone with stone slate roof and ashlar
ridge stack. Rectangular plan, with entry in gable from street, left-hand integral outshot and
probably later right-hand outshot with concrete tile roof 2 storeys. Gabled 2-window front, with
oak lintels over first-floor 3-light and attic-floor 2-light wood casements, and stone lintels over
central plank door flanked by 2- and 3-light wood casements with iron opening lights. Interior
not inspected. The house was built for a member of the Guild, the lower courses of masonry and
some materials being reused from an earlier cottage which stood on the site. A simple design,
exemplifying the care often taken by Ashbee in integrating new work into the existing
streetscape.
