Circa 1700. Interesting small house of the Wren period. Entrance front stuccoed
and altered with newer doorway and Tuscan porch. Sash windows with glazing bars.
2 storey, 4-5 window, red brick garden front, centre breaking forward. Burnt headers
to brickwork, stucco quoins. Steep hipped slate roof. Dormers with segmental heads.
Cornice and brackets probably later, a length of the original cornice remaining
on the north side. 2 storey red bick addition on south of house may originally
have been an orangery, converted circa 1800. Interior: good staircase with twisted
balusters, carved string and panelled under-sides to treads and risers. Curious
plaster caps to pilasters in stairwell. On 1st floor landing are two devices of
the Rhode family dated 1574 and 1641, thought to have been brought from the Rhode
seat in the Midlands or to be copies of plasterwork there. Round- headed staircase
was destroyed by blast and recently renewed. Contemporary panelling.
