2/130 Disused cottage to northwest of
Kelgernyk, near Higher Beeny

Cottage. Probably late C17 or early C18. Slate stone rubble and quartz. Rag slate
roof with gable ends, many of the slates have slipped. Stone rubble stack on left
hand gable end.
Rare survival of one room plan. Entrance, through a porch to left of centre leads
directly into the ground floor room. Heated by a fireplace in the left hand gable
end. A window stair in the rear right hand corner gives access to the single first
floor chamber. A small circa late C18 lean-to outshot has been added to the rear
left. The porch was also probably added in the late C18.
Two storeys. Single window front. Stone rubble gabled porch to left of centre and
6-pane window to right with timber lintel. First floor with remains of C19 2-light
casement in half dormer with raking roof. Masonry partly fallen in rear wall.
Interior: fireplace in left hand gable end with slightly chamfered timber lintel and
remains of opening for cloam oven in left hand side wall. Stone rubble winder stair
in rear right-hand corner, rising by a quarter-turn giving access to first floor.
C19 ceiling beams on ground floor. 3-bay roof structure renewed in circa late C18,
the apices of the principals lap-jointed and pegged and the collars pegged to the
face of the principals.
Although the cottage is in relatively poor condition, it is particularly unspoilt and
a rare survival of a plan type which, because of its modest status is rapidly
disappearing in Cornwall.
