4/127 Front Courtyard and south
terrace walls and gazebos,
at Parnham
GV II*

Courtyard and terrace walls. c.1910 in C17 style. Stone ashlar walls with
stone balustrade and coping, divided by square piers with tall pyramidal
ball-finials. Tall square piers to bay 3 (north) with heavy moulded cornices
and ball-finials. Similar piers on south side. Main entrance piers on east
side, square with vermiculated "Gibbsian" detailing. Eclectic entablatures,
and stone boars on top holding coats-of-arms. Terrace walls on south
front, with same details as front court. Round corner gazebos, plinth
with stone bench inside, carrying seven pseudo-Roman Doric columns. Stone
entablature with shallow saucer-domes, and openwork coronet with finials.
2 sets of steps down to lower level. Lions mask fountain-head. 2 narrow
water-channels with cascades beside steps, coped stone parapets at sides
with urns over piers. Balustrade at end of bottom terrace. Listed Grade
II* for Group Value.
