Barn. C14 or early C15. Probably built after 'La Syngledehall'
manor was joined to that of Mathams in 1301, by Sampson or
Hamelin Mathams (died 1382) but possibly by John Leventhorpe
c.1414 (VCH III (1912) 340). Large, 5-bay, aisled, facing S with
timber frame weatherboarded. Steep high roof, half-hipped at
ends with gablets. Central projecting porch on S with hipped
roof. Double doors on N side in central bay. Roofs formerly
thatched but now covered in corrugated iron, painted black.
Crown post roof structure with undecorated square crown posts,
square section braces to collar purlin and original flat laid
rafters. Long curved braces from arcade posts to arcade plates
and tie beams. Arcade plate joined in mid-span by edge halved
scarf with bridled abutments. Large medieval timberframed
structure of the greatest architectural and historic interest.
An unusual survival. Part of group of historic agricultural
buildings at Shingle Hall.
