House, C16, probably built for Leventhorpe family. Altered and
reduced in C18, rewindowed and back wing rebuilt in early C19.
The present house represents a part of larger house on this
moated manorial site. 2 storeys, 3 windows. Timber frame
plastered farmhouse with steep old red tile gabled roof with
slate eaves courses. C18 brick gable on W, with plinth,
projecting floor band, internal gable chimney and short brick
returns on front and rear walls. Higher 2 storey and cellar
early C19 rear wing in plastered brick with hipped slate roof.
Single storey C18/19 brick bakehouse with gabled tiled roof next
to rear wing. Oven projects on E under wooden shelter. Plan has
central stairwell with parlour to E and living room to W with
lean-to single storey rear kitchen extension. Very large C16
lateral chimney with 4 flues and cruciform shaft now serves small
Parlour and rebuilt rear wing only. This suggests house formerly
extended further to E and had an earlier rear wing. Symmetrical
3 window S front with early C19 flush sash windows with
4/8:3/6:4/8 panes on 1st floor and 8/8 panes on Ground floor
flanking C19 4-panel door with broad architrave and corner
blocks. Modern flat hood. Small modern single storey extension
in tile and plaster to E end. Interior shows 3 structural bays,
large open fireplace with cambered and stop chamfered beam at W,
and fine chamfered brick C16 4-centred arched brick fireplace in
parlour with relieving beam built in over arch. A picturesque
historic farmhouse forming a group with the farm buildings to the
NW.
