SP 81 NE WINGRAVE WITH ROWSHAM THE GREEN

GV II

Pair of cottages. Dated H de R 1877 on terracotta plaque. Red brick,
haLf-timbering with colourwashed roughcast infill to gabled part of
first floor. Tiled roofs with some fishscale tiles, brick chimneys with
pilasters. 2 storeys, 2 asymmetrical bays. Wooden casements. Right
bay of N. front is projecting and gabled with coved jetty to first
floor, and upper part of gable tilehung and overhanging. Ground floor
has 4-light casement, first floor has oriel window on coved base with
flanking herringbone brick panels. Left bay has cross casement to
ground floor left, chimney, and porch with blocked entry in angle
with right bay. Porch has hipped tile roof on turned wooden balusters.
Lean-to with entry to left side. Right side has lean-to with hipped
dormer. C20 half-timbered extensions to rear. One of picturesque group
of estate cottage blocks built around green, now Recreation Ground,
for Hannah de Rothschild in style influenced by nearby work of George
Devey at Ascott.
