GV II

Public House. Mid C18 altered C19 and C20. Built of coursed
stone rubble (painted) with ashlar quoins. Renewed tiled roof
with end chimneystacks, 1 cemented, 1 brick. 2 storeys; 3
windows. Upper floors are C20 metal framed casements. Ground
floor has mid C19 type sashes with verticals only. Doorcase
has flat wooden weather hood and brackets. Catslide roof to
rear. 1 storey extension to right with chimney. Interior has
chamfered spine beam with run out stop, stone fireplace with
wooden bressumer and brick breadoven, plank door and C19
matchboard panelling. Lease of 1744 survives by which John
Perkins of Wellow agreed to erect at his own expense on the
site of the old churchouse "a house with walls of brick or
stone, of 2 storeys high, the ground storey to be eight foot
high and the other storey seven foot to-the plate".
