School houses. Range of Abbey buildings of late C.14 and C.15 origin
incorporating part of the Cellarer's Building (c.f. The Great Cloisters),
the Abbey Guest House and the remains of the Blackstole Tower, taken over
and extended by the school in the C.15 and C.16, with C.17/C.18 alterations
and additions. Stone rubble with C.18 brickwork to 2nd floor; leaded and
tiled roofs, 3 storeys of irregular height. 6 window range (No. 19),
including Blackstole Tower, followed by irregularly fenestrated 4-window
range (No. 20). The archway under Blackstole Tower to left is late C.14
with carved spandrels to arch, and tierceron-vaulted passage behind leading
to No. 19A. No. 20 has a later C.18 Gothick doorway to right, adjoining
Blackstole Tower, with fanlight and side lights and drip mould-cornice
over. No. 19 has recessed glazing bar sashes in stucco reveals and 2-light
stone mullioned window to 3rd floor above doorway. No. 20 has small Gothic
lights irregularly grouped to ground floor; glazing bar sashes and a
3-light, stone mullioned, cusped headed window to upper floors. Brick
parapet partly crenellated. The rear has late C.17 and C.18 brick
additions with 2 three-storey fronts tangented to the Little Dean's
elevation of the tower and archway of No. 18, the adjoining single bay
front with a Venetian window to the 1st floor and the further 3-bay front
with recessed sashes under flat gauged arches, both with pedimented
doorways. Inside No. 20 contains the remains of the Cellarer's Building
and Abbey Guest House with a tierceron-vaulted ground floor with wall shafts
and remains of some original windows in east wall. On the 1st floor a late
C.14 flat pitched roof with tie beams partially survives, etc. See also
