Description

HIGH WEST STREET
+.l+>I
(South Side)
Nos 23 and 23A
SY 6990 7/56 8.5.50.
II GV
2.
Pair of red brick fronts. 3 storeys and attic. Dated 1735. Quoin pilasters
of stone are rusticated for 2 lower storeys, panelled above. Similar panelled
pilasters flank central bay on top storey. Central bay projects slightly.
On ground floor it has rustications and 2 linked doorways under moulded hood,
which is supported on 3 console brackets. On lst floor is round headed window
flanked by niches and Ionic pilasters. Entablature returned on each side of
springing of window-arch. Pediment. Other windows have flat stone arches with
triple stone keys. Moulded stone cornice with stucco parapet above. Dated
on lead rainwater heads, 1 original down-pipe and part of the other in existence.
2 shop window bays have been inserted on ground floor. It also seems doubtful
if the twin doorways are of the original early C18 date.
Nos 13 to 15 (consec), The Old Ship Public House, Nos 18, 19, The Royal Oak Public
House, Nos 21 to 24 (consec) and Church of Our Lady form a group.
