Cottage. Early-mid C18. Roughcast stone, graduated slate roof.
2 storeys, 3 windows to 1st floor. C20 part-glazed door
flanked on each floor to left by small sashes with glazing
bars and to right by 8-pane sashes (ground-floor right sash
altered). Small 4-pane sash above door. Ashlar gable copings,
roughcast end stacks. INTERIOR: lounge has beamed ceiling and
fireplace with corbelled oak lintel on ashlar jambs. Formerly
known as High Cocken, the home of George Romney from 1742-1755
(Trascatheric & Barker). George Romney was born at Beckside,
Dalton in Furness on 15th December 1734 and became 3rd of the
fashionable portrait painters in the time of Reynolds and
Gainsborough. A restored gravestone to him is situated at
Dalton, Church of St Mary (qv). Adjoining garages and dwelling
known as Romney Hall not of special interest.
