Farm outbuilding to the south of
Hall Farmhouse
II
Farm outbuilding. Late C16, with C18 alterations and C20
remodelling. Timber framed, the frame raised from a low stone
plinth, and later encased in rubble Coal Measures Sandstone
and C18 red brick. Stone slated roof, but with all but the
eaves of the north-eastern roof slope replaced in Welsh slate.
North-east elevation of 2 storeys and 4 bays, with 2 single
doorways, one with a quoined surround and at the south-east
end, and the other in a plain opening with a planked door and
overlight. Inserted double doorway supported by a steel joist
to centre. Three plain taking-in doors at first floor level.
Stone staircase to south-east gable. South-west elevation has
exposed frame posts, 2 linked by braces to the exposed wall
plate. Remains of original plinth at south-east end, which
incorporates blocked triangular vents. Lancet and cruciform
breathers elsewhere in cladding stonework and brickwork
respectively.
INTERIOR: tie-beam roof trusses with queen struts support
single side purlins and ridge purlins. Some purlins are C20
replacements, and all but 3 wind braces are now missing. The
trusses rest on jowel posts, and 3 transverse braces linking
posts and tie beams survive. Farm outbuildings which clearly
indicate a timber-framed phase prior to stone construction are
uncommon in upland Derbyshire.
