House, now flats. 1877-79, with mid and late C20 alterations.
By George Gilbert Scott Junior for John Spyvee Cooper. Brick
with pargeted panels and hipped plain tile roof with 2
panelled sde wall stacks. Queen Anne style. Brick plinth,
strring courses, pargeted frieze, rebated eaves, moulded
wooden gutter. Windows mainly have brick flat arches. 2
storeys plus attics; 5-window range. Central 8-pane sash
flanked by pairs of similar sashes, all with segmental heads.
Above, a large central brick dormer with a segment-headed
8-pane sash flanked by brick pilasters, with a flat roof
formerly topped with a dome. On either side, a smaller hipped
dormer with a 2-light casement. Central round-arched brick
doorcase with multiple keystones and hoodmould, and above it
an unglazed opening under a brick pediment. Moulded 6-panel
door with overlight and wrought-iron grille. On either side, a
square brick bay window, rebuilt mid C20, with hipped lead
roof and a pair of 8-pane sashes. This building is part of a
group of 8 houses by Scott, who was an early exponent of the
Queen Anne style. They are said to be the sole surviving
examples of his highly regarded domestic architecture.
