Lighthouse. 1856. By Thomas Meik. For the River Wear
Commission, for the old South Pier which had been built
1723-1750s. Transferred to this site 1983 when old South Pier
was shortened. Painted riveted wrought-iron plates around
cast-iron staircase. Tapered Tuscan column with gallery on
cornice and high dome on top lantern. 2 small windows now look
towards the harbour, the upper an oriel; two very small
roundels give light to other side of stair. Formerly had
plaque above doorway with sextant and date 1856.
INTERIOR said to have elaborate cast-iron spiral staircase
round central newel. Superseded by construction of new piers
between 1885 and 1907, the new S pier never completed.
Previous attribution to J Pickernell an error: Pickernell
designed a lighthouse in 1802.
