1857. Station of former Great Western Railway branch from Chippenham to Weymouth,
begun in late 1840's and opened in 1857. I K Brunel, Engineer. Stucco. Hipped
slate roof. Brick stacks with cornicing. 1 storey. Eaves overhang enough
to form an awning on the forecourt side, with matchboarded soffit, and supported
on curved wooden brackets with drop finials. Continuous sill band and continuous
plain impost band. Plinth. Flanking bays break forward slightly and have 3
round-arched windows, each with panelled pilasters, moulded capitals, raised
voussoirs and keystones. Central 3 bays have 2 double doors with blind panelled
fanlights, in plain surrounds with moulded cornices taken on scrolled consoles.
Central Venetian window, with panelled pilasters, moulded capitals, raised voussoirs
and keystone. South elevation has 1 canted bay with Venetian window, in which
the moulded impost band is carried straight across central window.
Extension to south has plain blocking course to roof, 3 round-arched windows
with plain imposts, voussoirs and keys on east elevation, and 1 on south elevation.
Separate block to north of which part is timber-framed and matchboarded. Wooden
eaves cornice. 5 round-arched windows with plain impost band carried straight
across, raised voussoirs and keys.
Building on west platform not listed. Platform elevation of main block insignificant.
Awning cantilevered as on iron girders appears to be later. Bridge early C20, and not
listed. West platform has good iron "Passengers are requested to cross the
line by the bridge" notice.
