House.

Purpose-built student hostel for women. 1884. Red brick. Slate mansard roof.
Free Jacobean/Queen Anne revival style. 4 storeys, attic and basement. 19 bays
wide. Irregular composition on curve of street. 7 full height canted bay
windows at intervals along facade; with stepped gables over, culminating in
chimney stacks. Entrance to sixth bay from right, which projects with dominating
stepped gable over; segmental arch to recessed entrance forming porches with
inset terracotta plaques inside, modelled by Richard Ledward RA. Square headed
windows; casements, timber mullions and transoms to some casements; small panes
to upper lights with timber glazing bars. Elaborate surviving interiors,
including open iron staircase with slender decorated iron supports, decorative
glazed faience to entrance hall, stained glass; drawing room with faience
fireplace, elaborate plasterwork and woodwork, and dining room with 12 Doulton
tile panels illustrating the arts of music and pottery, designed by John Eyre;
etc. Early example of purpose-built student hostel; terracotta faience and
tilepictures donated by Henry Doulton.

Cabmen's shelter 1888. Timber framed, tongue and groove timber panels; felt clad timber roof. 7 bays by 3 bays. Entrance to centre of north side. Windows to upper wall in second, fourth and sixth bays. Stump of fl?che to roof. Decorative rafter ends to eaves. One of the earliest surviving cabmen's shelters, erected by Cabmen's Shelter Fund.
